A commercial chandelier like the one shown here could easily cost thousands of dollars. Think what you could do with the money if you could easily make this DIY chandelier! Basically you collect some branches, paint them to your favorite color and make a sphere with them. Lastly just add LED light source to complete the chandelier.

Using a 300W incandescant is madness – I’m amazed it didn’t catch fire.
To get good sharp shadowns use a lamp with a very small fillament – I would use a 75W Low voltage Halogen lamp with a transformer in the ceiling rose.

Painting the branches black, or darker? Maybe that, with the 200 watt would work. Im going to do this but use a soft rose light, obvi not casting a shadow, but still pretty off, or on!

Making the shell of the light frame larger so the branches are further from the light source as well as making the branches thicker may help. Thick of shadow puppets. Making your puppet shape to close to the light source will distort the image.

I think it’ safe to say that that picture above has been altered. First of all, there are no shadows cast on the bed or the floor. Also, don’t you find it odd that the branching shadows are exact mirror images of each other? I don’t know any branches that do that in nature. Good try though!

I can see the shadows on the bed, not very clear but it’s there. There’re some on the floor too, I can see some close to the lamps.

I love this DIY version! While it would be amazing to have the shadows thrown across the room, I believe it would become maddening after a while! I am so making this version for my bedroom! Total win for me! 🙂

The light source is critical to casting sharp shadows. The best light source would be a point source. The poorest is a diffuse source such as the fluorescent and frosted lamps that were tried. The 300W over exposed while the 200W clear lamp best approximated a point source. Keep in mind that incandescent lamps are a line source not a point source. I would try two high power clear lens LED’s mounted back to back (to illuminate both hemispheres)

I agree you need more branches and I think it would work. BTW do you have any videos on mason jar lights or laminate flooring?

The original art piece looks like they imitated the shape of Manzanita branches. I think their’s is a resin mold version of branches. Way too symmetrical to be found in nature.

Dan S. is correct. As a shadow theater artist I can confirm you need a point light source. Try a single LED. Halogen might be too hot. I think the original lamp must be cast in two parts to make the symmetrical shadows. I’d prefer something more organic and asymmetrical. Good DIY though!
