Our blood types are genetic, meaning we inherit our blood type from our parents. According to the ABO blood group system, there are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens – A and B – on the surface of red blood cells: A, B, AB, or O.
- Group A – has only the A antigen on red cells
- Group B – has only the B antigen on red cells
- Group AB – has both A and B antigens on red cells
- Group O – has neither A nor B antigens on red cells

The bottom chart shows you how to determin the father’s blood type if the child and mother’s blood type are known. Theoretically the same chart can be used to determine the mother’s blood type if the child and the father’s blood is known. Read more at CanadianCRC.
